PATIENT RESOURCES

Surgical care involves a team of specialized providers working together to ensure your safety and comfort. Texans Anesthesia providers are responsible for delivering anesthesia care to prevent pain and keep you safely supported throughout your procedure.

Preoperative Evaluation For Surgery

The preoperative evaluation is an important step in preparing for surgery. It includes a comprehensive medical history, physical examination, and, when needed, diagnostic testing such as lab work, imaging, or an ECG. You will also receive clear instructions on how to prepare, including fasting guidelines and medication management.

This visit provides an opportunity to review your anesthesia plan and address any questions or concerns. Our goal is to ensure you are safely and thoroughly prepared for a smooth surgical experience and optimal outcome.

During Surgery

There are several types of anesthesia, and the appropriate choice depends on your medical history, age, type of procedure, and personal preferences.

  • General anesthesia  Medication is used to place you in a controlled state of unconsciousness so you do not feel pain during surgery. It is typically used for major procedures.

  • Regional anesthesia  A local anesthetic is injected near specific nerves to numb a targeted area of the body, commonly used for procedures involving the extremities, abdomen, or chest.

  • Spinal or epidural anesthesia  An anesthetic is administered near the spinal cord to numb the lower half of the body, often used for lower abdominal, pelvic, or lower limb surgeries.

  • Conscious sedation  Medication is given to help you relax and remain drowsy while still responsive, commonly used for minor procedures..

Your anesthesiologist will work closely with you and your surgical team to select the safest and most appropriate option and will continuously monitor you throughout your procedure to ensure your comfort and safety.

After Surgery

After surgery, the anesthesiologist continues to monitor your vital signs until you are awake and stable for transfer to the recovery room or inpatient unit. Postoperative care may include:

  • Pain management  Ongoing assessment and treatment of pain using appropriate medications to keep you comfortable.

  • Fluid and electrolyte balance  Monitoring hydration and electrolyte balance to support normal organ function and reduce complications.

  • Airway management  Ensuring normal respiratory function and addressing any airway-related concerns after anesthesia.

  • Nausea and vomiting management  Administering medications as needed to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting.

  • Coordination with the surgical team  Communicating with the surgical team to support wound care and address any postoperative concerns.

Our goal is to ensure a safe, comfortable recovery and support the best possible postoperative outcome.
